Known for its world-class food, culture, and design scene, Copenhagen isn’t exactly a cheap destination. But don’t let the high price of Denmark’s capital stop you from visiting – the city has plenty of budget accommodations to choose from, so you can keep your crown for the rest of the experiences you’ll have. Just because these hotels can be booked for less (mostly less than 100 euros per night) doesn’t mean you’ll be staying in a shack either. Copenhagen budget stays are actually pretty good if you just spend a little time researching. And guess what? We just did that. Read on for our top picks, from a wallet-centric spot to a surprisingly stylish hostel.

Best Overall: Kong Arthur Hotel
See rates on TripAdvisor
No, that’s not a typo: Kong means “king” in Danish, and for a budget property, this 155-room hotel will make you feel like one. This former residence, which was once the home of 19th century apprentices, is well-maintained and well-designed, with hygge touches like fireplaces, stacks of books, pillow-filled window sills, and a daily “Cozy Hour” where the hotel serves ” something small ‘for guests. Surprisingly, this hotel also has a large on-site spa, as well as three restaurants serving Italian, Spanish, and Japanese cuisine. The hotel rooms, available in single and double formats, are clean and individually decorated, and those who book a spa package will get a spa room for additional relaxation. If you are traveling with your family, the superior double rooms can accommodate two additional beds for little heads. Guests can also join the hotel’s running club (with free access to spa facilities afterward) and get live music on the guest list at a nearby jazz club.

Best for Families: 66 Guldsmeden
See rates on TripAdvisor
Located on the main street of Copenhagen’s trendy Vesterbro neighborhood, this hotel, part of the same group as Axel Guldsmeden, offers all stops for parents and children. The staff are lovely and very welcoming to children and pets, for that matter, which starts a proper stay. Guest units are simple but charming, with dark wood and artwork done by the owner’s father-in-law. The hotel is close to transit with a bus station a minute away, as well as close to attractions such as the Tivoli Gardens, which is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Back in the neighborhood, there are many parks, art galleries, and local restaurants to discover. Speaking of food, breakfast isn’t free, but the hotel restaurant is very cozy on a winter’s day with heated balconies and a fireplace.

Best Boutique: Ibsens Hotel
See rates on TripAdvisor
In addition to a great nightly rate, this three-star hotel also adheres to admirable green practices, making it a pleasant stay not only for your wallet but for the environment as well. Guests love the efficient and friendly staff, and the location is great too, being just a five-minute walk from the metro, from which it takes 15 minutes to get to the airport. The trendy Noerrebro neighborhood is also within walking distance, and the Nansensgade area next to the hotel has cute local shops and cafes, as well as a monthly flea market. Rooms are well decorated for the price, with stylish pops of color and modern furnishings. However, know that bathrooms are designed as wet rooms, so don’t be surprised if things get wet. Breakfast is not included.

Best Hostel: Steel House Copenhagen
See rates on TripAdvisor
Let’s get one thing straight: a hostel can be just as nice as a hotel, and this hostel, run by a group of hotels, proves it with a relaxed atmosphere and a full mix of guests, including families and seniors. If you haven’t stayed in a hostel before, be prepared for it to remove the less flattering stereotype of accommodations from your mind. Steel House Copenhagen is stylish and fun, with excellent staff who are extraordinarily helpful and amenities like foosball and pool tables. The dorms are simple but very clean, with bathroom and shower, bunk beds and private lockers. Private rooms are also available for travelers who want to keep their space. Surprisingly, Steel House also has an on-site gym and pool, though there is a separate fee to use them. We love the USB charging ports scattered everywhere,

Best for Romance: Axel Guldsmeden
See rates on TripAdvisor
Sleek and modern, the Axel Guldsmeden is a romantic retreat that is also located in the city center. The rooms are decorated in a modern and sexy Balinese style, with beautiful woods and four poster beds in each of its 202 rooms. If you want to take a dip in a high-end (but still inexpensive) room, there are four penthouse suites with private rooftop terraces and whirlpool tubs. There’s also a spa on-site, as well as a great restaurant, Cafe du Nord, that won’t get you much farther than restaurants in town. Guests also rave about the staff – everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful with recommendations and advice. Interestingly, Axel Guldsmeden is the newest concept ‘test’ hotel within the larger Guldsmeden chain, so be sure to ask if there’s anything fun when you check in.

Best Downtown: Hotel Windsor
See rates on TripAdvisor
Located within walking distance of Copenhagen’s main attractions – Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn and more, Hotel Windsor has a wonderful central location, just a minute’s walk from Norreport Metro Station. The rooms are plain and simple (you won’t stay here for the design) but they are larger than the pictures that make them look and they are really clean. There is also a shared kitchen available for your use, so you can save a bit of money by packing a picnic lunch or having a late dinner when you return (there is a market nearby with a great selection of produce). Breakfast is conveniently included in the room rate and served at a partner hotel a couple of minutes’ walk away. Please note that bathrooms and showers are shared at this hotel. Said that

Best for stopovers: Hotel Nebo
See rates on TripAdvisor
If you arrive late to the city or leave the city early, you will want a hotel that is not too far from the train station or the airport, and Hotel Nebo is just that. The hotel has 87 rooms and, although its furniture is a bit dated, it is ideal for a night’s sleep. Both the hotel and the train station are centrally located, so if you have a few hours to explore, you can easily reach the main attractions on foot. If you are traveling by plane, it is also only 12 minutes from the airport to the reception. Travelers like the variety of room sizes available, from single rooms with a shared bathroom to quadruple rooms and apartments for larger groups traveling together. Breakfast is simple but free and conveniently starts at 6:30 am for those with morning outings.

Best for Singles: Cabinn City Hotel
Buy on Cabinn.com
If you are traveling on your own, Cabinn City Hotel is one of the few places in Copenhagen where it is not too painful not to have a partner to split the bill. Guests say you get what you pay for – compact rooms that come with a private bathroom (I just know in advance it’s a wet room style so the floor could splatter) and a really basic breakfast, though rooms have kettles too, which is a nice touch. The layout actually plays quite well with the size of the smaller room. Each unit is designed to resemble a cabin on a boat (hence the name of the place as well). Overall, it’s a cheap place to crash, and its downtown location will get you where you need to go in the morning. Cabinn City Hotel is located just a 5-minute walk from Central Station and close to Tivoli Gardens and the main shopping street.

Best B&B: Bed & Breakfast Copenhagen
See rates on TripAdvisor
Located just outside the city center, but with a metro stop about an eight-minute walk from the property, Bed & Breakfast Copenhagen is a great option for travelers looking for a more cohesive stay in Denmark’s capital. Excellent value for money, this bed and breakfast offers spacious and scrupulously clean rooms, some with king beds. As bed and breakfast owners, the owners are incredibly hospitable and take the time to explain the main sights and attractions to checking-in guests. Travelers on a budget find the kitchen very convenient for packing lunches before a day on the town. Nearby, there is a beach area, and the surroundings of the B&B are home to creative types such as artists, who have moved into the neighborhood’s old warehouses. Just keep in mind that rooms tend to be booked early (many guests stay long-term),
