Where to shop in Copenhagen

There are several shopping districts in Copenhagen, Denmark, where you can find high-end fashion houses, department stores, shopping malls, as well as bargains at flea markets. No matter what your tastes or budget are, you should be able to find what you are looking for in Copenhagen.

Department store

In the center of the Danish capital there are two department stores: Det Ny Illum and Magasin du Nord.

Det Ny Illum is situated halfway from Stroget in Amagertorv. This well-designed and well-stocked department store has everything from perfumes to ready-to-wear fashion on its premises. It’s particularly great if you’re looking for Scandinavian brands to take home.

Magasin du Nord can be easily found in front of the Royal Theater. This large department store has been around Kongens Nytorv since 1879, and is still one of the best addresses to shop in Copenhagen.

Malls

Copenhagen has two large popular shopping centers. One of them is Fisketorvet, located next to the port, just outside the city center. There are a multitude of shops and restaurants, and a movie theater that also offers entertainment.

Located in the Frederiksberg area of Copenhagen is the Frederiksberg Centret shopping center. It is about a 10 minute bus ride to the town hall square. Frederiksberg Centret is a fun and modern shopping center with a variety of boutiques with clothes, shoes and accessories. While you’re in the area, you can head to the nearby Frederiksberg shopping district for a bargain on Royal Copenhagen Porcelain at the Royal Copenhagen factory outlet store located in the former factory in the late 19th century.

Strøget y Købmagergade

Strøget, Copenhagen’s main shopping street, is the longest pedestrian street in the world, where you can buy big brands, both Danish and international, such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cerutti, Mulberry, Chanel and Boss.

For lower prices, head to clothing stores like H&M or other small independent shops with clothes and glasses along Købmagergade.

Flea markets

In Denmark, you should visit the local flea markets. It doesn’t matter if you’re stopping in a big city like Copenhagen or walking through a small town, you’re unlikely to miss one on summer weekends. In Copenhagen, there are three main markets. Frederiksberg and the flea markets of Israels Plads offer great value. Gammel Strand, however, is unique with its canal-side location and outdoor cafes. The flea market season in Denmark begins in late May and ends in early October.

Common shopping hours

As is common in most European countries, the time is shown by a 24-hour clock, commonly known in the United States as military time. Most stores operate Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., which is equivalent to saying 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Saturdays, stores should be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). On Sunday, only a few stores could be open, mainly bakeries, flower shops, and souvenir shops.

Shopping centers and department stores may have longer opening hours.

With a special permit, shops and businesses have been given eight Sundays during the year in which they are allowed to open their businesses. These are typically April 2, May 4, June 15, and December 3, 10, 17, and 21 (the last four Sundays before Christmas).
