Tips for Visiting Copenhagen's Famous Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens (or simply Tivoli) in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen opened in 1843. It is the third oldest amusement park in the world after Dyrehavs Bakken and Vienna Prater Park. Tivoli is also the most visited amusement park in Scandinavia today.

Tivoli is an experience suitable for any age and any traveler. In the park, you will find romantic gardens, amusement park attractions, entertainment options, and restaurants.

Walks and entertainment

Tivoli has one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the world that is still in operation. Called “Rutsjebanen”, the wooden roller coaster was built in Malmö more than a hundred years ago, in 1914.

Other highlights among the many rides are a modern zero-G roller coaster, a flight simulator called Vertigo, and Himmelskibet (Star Flyer), one of the tallest carousels in the world.

Tivoli is also a popular venue for events in Copenhagen, especially in the huge Tivoli concert hall. Other entertainment options (usually free) are found at the Pantomime Theater. Tivoli is hosting part of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival concerts in July.

Admission and tickets

Please note that admission to the park does not include any of the amusement park rides. This means that you have the option of simply enjoying the gardens or getting some thrills by purchasing separate travel tickets. Entrance by itself is quite cheap, but it depends on the time of year and the age of the visitor. However, children under the age of 3 are always free.

Tivoli travel tickets have an additional cost. Note that trips require one to three tickets each, but Tivoli also sells unlimited multi-ride passes that cost roughly three times as much as your park admission. Visiting Tivoli isn’t on our list of free things in Copenhagen, but it’s definitely worth the expense.

The summer season in Tivoli is from mid-April to the end of September. Then the park transforms for Halloween in Tivoli until the end of October, followed by the wonderfully romantic Christmas market during Christmas in Tivoli. Tivoli is closed on December 24, 25 and 31.

How to get to Tivoli

With the park so popular, many transport options stop here, for example the CityCirkel, a small tourist bus. The Tivoli entrance address is Vesterbrogade 3, København, Denmark. There are many signs around Copenhagen that take you to the park.

accommodation

Tivoli is a popular destination, so much so that the park has two hotels. The five-star hotel Nimb was built in 1909 within the Tivoli Gardens. It is expensive, but it is a classy option. This hotel is often used by couples getting married in or near Tivoli. It is a great honeymoon stay. The hotel has a bit more romance than other more modern hotels in central Copenhagen.

Do you need an alternative? That is not a problem at all. Near the park, there is the Tivoli Hotel at Arni Magnussons Gade 2, 1577 København, Denmark, which is a good alternative. The hotel offers more reasonable prices and is therefore more suitable for groups or families. Either way, it is a good idea to stay close to the park so you can visit during the less busy times and enjoy everything much more.

Fun fact

Initially, the Tivoli Gardens park was called “Tivoli & Vauxhall”.
