Fun fact: Shawn Layden was asked during the 2017 PlayStation Experience when it would be possible to change username on PSN . His answer was that I would not have to ask him that question in the next issue. Coincidences of life, this year Sony will not hold the event, but it seems that Layden has not forgotten that .
According to Kotaku, four anonymous developers from different studios specializing in multiplayer games have confirmed that they are preparing for user name changes on the PlayStation Network. In fact, the American media claims that one of them showed the document sent by Sony.
The username or PSN ID is a mandatory procedure in most current games : it is our identity when playing online and through it we link the digital purchases we make for Sony consoles.
In fact, if we go to the official PlayStation website, we will see today how it insists that once an online ID is created it is not possible to modify it . And they are cured in health so that users do not take unwanted detours.

According to Kotaku, the image featured in the document was a guide to prepare developers for the online ID change , showing a PlayStation Network user profile that included the Edit Username option.
The PlayStation Network service started 12 years ago, in 2006, long enough for many players to not feel as identified with the name they used then, keeping their ID online to keep progress, trophies and accumulated purchases over time .
And, we are not going to fool ourselves, most of us mortals have used some ridiculous nickname at some time.

For its part, Xbox offers to change the Gamertag (the equivalent of the username) in an easy way, although it has an additional cost . Of course, in the event that gamertag had been created automatically, it can be changed for free once.
Obviously, Sony has to confirm, deny or officially announce the name change. However, and only assuming that the step is taken, there would be a number of nuances to consider:
- Will it be an exclusive service for PS Plus or will it come at an additional cost?
- Is there a limit number of changes that can be made?
- Will it be available globally?
- And, most importantly, do you have some kind of relationship with the promised cross-play?
We’ll see what Sony says.
