The exotic cat, 20 curiosities about this peculiar feline

It is no coincidence that when someone sees an exotic cat they confuse it with the Persian cat, its closest relative, because it maintains almost all its characteristics except that of having a long coat. The exotic cat is an artificial breed but over the years it has achieved a magnificent character and appearance that make it the perfect animal to have at home. In fact, since 1967 it has been accepted as a purebred .

This feline arose from crossing the British shorthair, the American shorthair and the Persian cat in 1966 thanks to Jane Martinke, a breeder and judge of feline breeds. Hybridisations were also carried out with the Russian blue and the Burmese cat. But what was Martinke’s goal? She wanted to get a Persian cat with the gene for short hair, but not only did she achieve that, but also a cat with a robust complexion, soft hair and an ideal temperament emerged.

This cat is not as well known as the Persian but, thanks to the wonderful qualities of its fur, including that it produces less allergy than that of other cats , it has started to gain a lot of popularity.

The exotic cat has a rounded, muscular body with short legs. His nose is very flat, his eyes are round and his small ears make him have a face full of sweetness. It can weigh up to 6 kilos but it is not a very large cat. In addition, it boasts dense hair that does not need many brushing and that can vary from a single color (white, black, orange or cream) to several colors such as tabby or brindle, bicolor (it is usually combined with white), mottled and tricolor, among other patterns.

What most attracts the attention of these felines is their character: they are calm but at the same time very curious cats. They love to play and are compatible with other animals as well as with children since they always seek the attention of their owners and find it in the little ones in the house.
