The first baby is born in the ICU of the La Fe hospital in Valencia, where his mother was admitted for Covid

Admissions to hospitals for pregnant women with Covid occur in Spain. Hence, organizations such as the WHO and gynecologists encourage other future mothers to get vaccinated, the only way to avoid endangering the health of mother and child.

The latest example comes from the La Fe Hospital in Valencia that has reported the first birth in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a baby of a pregnant woman with Covid-19 .

Emergency cesarean section

This story began at the beginning of July, when Rita, a native of India and a resident of Spain and who was 28 weeks pregnant, entered the ICU of Hospital La Fe after having been infected with Covid, without having received the vaccine. .

The doctors decided that the pregnancy would continue its course, with the administration of corticosteroids and other measures such as assisted respiration, until her state of health “suddenly worsened” due to pneumonia, as explained by Paula Ramírez, one of the doctors who attended the mother in the ICU.

“Although there was a gynecological follow-up, there came a time when we needed the pregnancy to end because the volume of the pregnancy conditioned the mother’s way of breathing and there were treatments that could not be applied to her.”

So on July 26, the Pediatrics team and the ICU team organized a delivery room and a neonatal unit at the bedside and an emergency cesarean section was performed on the woman because she was in danger if she was transferred. According to the doctor, the baby was born “without any complications”,

At the same time, the delivery also meant an improvement for the mother , since at the end of the pregnancy she could be given treatments and care that were not possible before, such as medication and a change of position to help her breathe.

The baby was born without Covid

Samir was born free of coronavirus. After delivery, she was admitted to the neonatal ICU for a few weeks for premature delivery, but did not require intubation.

The child’s mother, Rita, was discharged from the hospital a few weeks ago and this week she and her family visited the medical team that treated her during her stay in the hospital to thank the care received, something that encourages them, as recognized by the Dr. Ramírez:

“Reuniting the family again and seeing that they are all well and recovered is what gives us the strength to continue.”

And the hospital center wanted to share the meeting on its Twitter account, also as a reminder of the need for pregnant women to be vaccinated, as Dr. Paula Ramírez points out:

“There is data that indicates that it is safe during pregnancy and it is much riskier to catch Covid without being vaccinated.”
