A woman with Covid-19 , who had been isolated for several days in the high-risk ward of the Maternal and Child Hospital in Malaga, gave birth to the first premature baby on Sunday : a 1.2-kilo girl born at 27 weeks and five days gestation.
According to Diario Sur, the mother began to feel worse and has been transferred to the operating room, where the doctors decided to perform an emergency cesarean section.
The baby’s tests came back negative
As soon as she was born, she was isolated in an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Surveillance Unit (ICU) of that hospital, and the coronavirus test was carried out, which was known the next day that she was negative. The girl was born free of Covid-19. However, you will have a second test to confirm that you have not developed the virus.
The mother is admitted to the ICU of the Maternity Area. According to medical sources, her condition after delivery was “worrying”, but she is responding well to treatments and evolving with good oxygen saturations. For its part, the premature newborn remains stable and professionals believe that it will succeed.
The evidence is confirmed
The test result confirms the evidence so far on mother-to-fetus transmission during pregnancy: that the virus is not transmitted in pregnancy.
The research is very scarce, only two studies conducted in China. The first study was conducted with nine newborns who were delivered by cesarean section to infected mothers in the third trimester, and all were born virus-free.
And the other recently released study, conducted with four infected Wuhan mothers and their newborn babies, has also come to the same conclusion. Three babies tested negative for coronavirus and the parents did not give consent to test the fourth. Three of them were delivered by cesarean section and one vaginally.
