The United States Social Security Administration has just released the list of the most popular baby names in 2011 , a ranking to take into account if you are expecting a child and want to be original when naming it.
Jacob stands out as the most used for men, after 13 consecutive years, while Sophia has gone to the first place taking it from Isabella, a name that made the “Twilight” film saga fashionable.
Mason is the second most used name for boys, being the only new name that has appeared as a novelty in the list of the ten most popular in both sexes. Additionally, Michael has disappeared from the top five names for the first time in 63 years.
How could it be otherwise, there are names that emerge strongly due to the popularity of some characters in cinema, television, sports … For example, the name that increased its popularity the most was Brantlye (from position 736 to 320) , due to a rise of local celebrities with that name, such as American football player John Brantley or singer Brantley Gilbert.
Among the girls, the name that rose the most was Briella (from 891 to 497), perhaps a reflection of the impact on pop culture of the stylist Briella Calafiore, who starred in reality shows.
We imagine that there are still few children with names of Hispanic origin in the lists of anthroponyms in the United States, a downward trend that dates back a few years. We leave you with the “top ten” names for boys and girls :
