Who said that sweets are bad for your health? A team of scientists from the University of Queensland has developed the first muffin that helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease . The muffin contains beta-glucans , a type of compound whose frequent intake has been linked to a maintenance of blood cholesterol levels and, therefore, a lower risk of suffering from heart diseases, such as high blood pressure .
The beta-glucans contained in this innovative muffin are a type of fiber that occurs naturally in the cell walls of cereals and oats , and has the ability to lower cholesterol levels. The team of Dr. Nima Gunness, who leads the development of this “miracle” muffin , had already found evidence that consuming 3 grams of beta-glucans from oats a day is effective in controlling cholesterol levels , by slowing down the absorption of fats in the blood. “My intention was to synthesize my discovery in the form of a product that people can and want to eat, like this cupcake.”
Dr. Gunness has been perfecting her muffin for months: “The trick is to keep the muffin from being juicy by adding all the oat bran and beta glucans.” Even so, he has obtained a “tasty and attractive” product , which people can take as a healthy option and as a way to keep their cholesterol levels under control. However, the intention of Dr. Gunness’s team “is not for people to stop taking their medications .” The miracle muffin is already in the process of production and distribution to the main coffee shops and restaurants in Australia.
