The purple flying squid ( Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis ) was captured on camera by the OceanX team of marine biologists and filmmakers who embarked on an underwater exploration adventure in the Red Sea in 2020. The funny thing was that while investigating the ship Pella, which sank in November 2011 at more than 800 meters (while carrying 1,229 passengers off the coast of Aqaba in Jordan), they saw a huge creature in front of their eyes, wrapping its entire body around from the bow of the wreck shortly after.
It was huge. Larger than a human being.
It wasn't until September 2021 that they discovered that the mysterious creature was 'the giant form' of the purple flying squid that generally grows up to two feet long. Yes indeed; Giant squid, which are rarely seen, can grow up to 20 meters long.
The team recorded a short video of the creature that has been widely disseminated on social media.
