Although they seem easy animals to keep, fish also require great care. Choosing a fish that does not fit your aquarium or mixing it with other breeds could be a mistake, so you should pay attention when choosing one. Therefore, if this is your first time filling a freshwater aquarium, you will have to look for breeds that are compatible with each other to avoid possible conflicts.
Fish must have enough space
Not all fish are small, and some may grow larger than necessary. It is essential that the fish have enough space to swim and be able to live calmly. Therefore, you should consult an expert on the size that the animal will reach as an adult. If you have already bought the aquarium, the ideal thing would be to look for a species that enters it.
On the other hand, if you do not have the fish tank yet, opt for one that is as spacious as possible and that fits the characteristics of the fish. Remember that some fish live in very small tanks or need a lot of space to avoid stress.
Start with simple breeds
Some species require more care than others. So if you’re not a fish expert yet, it’s best to start with easy-to-keep breeds. Some of the best known species are the T etras, Guppies or Betta fish, although the latter cannot be mixed with other breeds. Also the fish Molly, the Platy or the Danio are a great success for beginners.
Discus (Symphysodon) , although not a bad choice, is usually challenging, so it may not go well with other fish breeds. In addition, your water must be completely clean, so you will have to clean the aquarium at least twice a week.
Monitor temperature and food
Some fish need cold water, while others are warm. Therefore, you must ensure that all your fish have the same temperature requirements. If you mix cold-water fish with tropical fish, chances are that some of the two will be harmed.
The same happens with food, since everyone should eat the same type of food. Most species can feed on flakes, but there are some breeds that only eat organic matter or live foods such as worms. Keep an eye out!
Look for fish related in behavior
As with people and other living things, not all fish are compatible or exhibit the same behavior. Some are quite territorial, while others prefer to live calmly. Therefore, it is essential that you mix races that get along well with each other to avoid conflicts.
