Tortilla fish? A fisherman catches this unusual specimen

A fisherman from Florida (USA) named Tom Bosworth was fishing with two friends on March 31 when he caught a strange looking fish. Not knowing what it was about, he recently decided to post the photo on social media and now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) has confirmed that it is an orange lime fish ( aluterus schoepfil ).

Before taking it out of the water, I thought it had caught a plastic bag due to the off-white color in the water . “Okay, I’ll take out the trash today,” he remembered thinking . Once he picked up the catch, he realized it was a white fish covered in orange flecks.

He and his fishing buddies took some photos and released the fish, which was approximately 55 centimeters long.

The orange fish does not have only orange specks on its body. It features a wide variety of colors and patterns, from olive gray to orange, white and light speckled colors to complex patterns, according to the Florida Museum. These fish, which have a fairly small mouth, usually live in seagrass beds, where they feed on algae and other vegetation.

It is eatable?

Not very palatable to humans. These fish have tough, leathery skin and do not have much meat. In fact, it can even be toxic, as it has been associated with several cases of ciguatera, a food poisoning caused by eating fish contaminated with a toxin produced by unicellular microorganisms that live in detritus and in certain algae. The usual thing, therefore, is to see them only in aquariums.

This specimen was photographed and returned to the water.
