At the Technical University of Darmstadt, several people have symptoms of intoxication and have to go to hospital. The investigators found a harmful substance in several drinks.
Darmstadt – The police suspect that a harmful substance in several milk packs and water containers caused symptoms of poisoning in people at the Technical University of Darmstadt.
The police in southern Hesse announced that it still has to be investigated which substance is involved. According to the current status, the containers were mixed with the substance between Friday and Monday. “The pungent smell of the liquids concerned” is particularly noticeable.
A man still in critical condition
Six people had to be cared for in a hospital. All had previously eaten or drunk something in building L201 on the Lichtwiese campus, said a police spokesman. The health of a 30-year-old student who was in mortal danger is still critical, the authorities said late in the evening. The first people were brought to clinics around noon with symptoms of intoxication such as malaise and discoloration of the extremities.
Rescue workers searched all rooms in the building in which the materials science department is located for food and beverages. Numerous samples were taken for laboratory tests.
By the evening, the police had received no evidence that other buildings were affected, it said. She had previously announced that emergency services would search other buildings on campus for “contaminated products” as a precaution.
Warnings also via app
The police and the TU Presidium advise not to eat or drink any food or drink that was stored in rooms on the Lichtwiese campus during the alleged crime period. Anyone who drank or ate something on Monday in building L201 and feels uncomfortable or whose extremities are now bluish should seek medical help immediately. In the case of discoloration, one should not move as much as possible and call the emergency doctor immediately. The people in Hesse who ate at TU Darmstadt were also warned via the Katwarn app.
By evening no other people had reported to the police with symptoms of malaise or symptoms of poisoning. The investigators initially focused on a “kind of tea kitchen” in which items would also be stored – for example in a refrigerator. These rooms are freely accessible. dpa
