Fire in the patient room of the Giessen University Hospital

Shortly after midnight, a fire broke out in the surgical ward of the Giessen University Hospital. 15 people had to be treated on suspicion of smoke inhalation.

Giessen – A fire broke out in the surgical ward of the Giessen University Hospital on Saturday night. 15 people were given intensive care as a precautionary measure on suspicion of smoke gas poisoning, including patients, staff and a firefighter.

A spokesman for the university clinic announced on Saturday that they are doing well under the circumstances. The damage was estimated at around one million euros.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight for an initially unexplained cause in a room in the normal ward. Eight patients were evacuated, a police spokesman announced. The evacuation was not very easy because of the patient’s state of health and was therefore a bit protracted.

According to the information provided by the university clinic, the affected station and surrounding areas are currently closed and are being investigated by forensic technology. As a result of the fire, the clinic was briefly deregistered from emergency care, but has been fully ready for emergencies since the early morning. dpa
