The Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave system, where the man died, is one of the longest in Great Britain. According to the BBC, it was the longest cave rescue operation in Wales to date.
Penwyllt – A man was freed from a cave in Wales after around 54 hours in a dramatic rescue operation.
After his fall on Saturday, in which he injured himself, the man was brought from the 62-kilometer-long Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave system near the village of Penwyllt on Monday evening, the local cave rescue organization SMWCRT announced on Tuesday night. More than 300 volunteers from all over Great Britain, together with the rescue services, managed to transport the injured through technically demanding terrain to the surface.

There he was received with applause and cheers, according to media reports, before he was taken to an ambulance. In the incident, the man is said to have sustained several non-life-threatening injuries, including his jaw, leg and spine. “Given how long he’s been in the cave (…) he’s doing really well,” said an emergency services spokesman, Gary Evans. “The cave-goer was very unlucky here,” said SMWCRT spokesman Peter Francis. The man was experienced and fit. “He just put his foot in the wrong place.” Dpa
