You didn't know you were pregnant until you gave birth to your baby in the bathroom

This news seems really incredible to me. The discomfort that I have had in my pregnancies left no doubt that a baby was on the way, even though the lack of menstruation could be due to another cause. Nausea, tiredness, a growing belly … and of course, the baby’s movements! At the end of the pregnancy the kicks and elbows were so strong that it was impossible not to think that there was someone in there making themselves known.

Apparently, these surprise pregnancies are very strange but not as strange as I imagined, because we have already talked about several similar cases. This time it was a woman from Massachusetts (United States) who gave birth to her baby in her home bathroom without knowing that she was pregnant .

I thought they were kidney stones

Melissa Surgecoff and Donald Campbell is a couple who were planning their wedding for June and whose life plans took a radical turn on March 8 with the unexpected birth of their baby .

Melissa, 38, said she is used to battling pain as she suffers from multiple sclerosis. But that morning the pain worsened, she felt strong cramps and they thought it could be due to a kidney stone, so they decided to call the emergency room for help.

“There is a baby in the bathroom”

When the ER doctors arrived, there were no kidney stones. What there was was a 2,890-pound baby they named Liam

“We were a bit in shock. We weren’t expecting it, and suddenly there’s a baby in the bathroom,” Campbell told local media.

She says she has always had an irregular cycle and, in hindsight, she had gained quite a bit of weight and felt fluttering that she thought was gas.

But when it came to weight gain, the mother attributed it to something else. “We thought it was a drug because she had just switched to a new multiple sclerosis drug and that was one of the symptoms, the weight gain,” he said.

Despite not having any prenatal care, the little boy and the mother are fine and after a couple of days in the hospital they were able to go home.

Cryptic pregnancy

When the woman arrives at the time of delivery without knowing that she was pregnant, we speak of a cryptic pregnancy. It is associated with women who have irregular periods, (caused for example, by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), early menopause, or women who practice high-impact sports.

It can also happen when the contraceptive method fails or during breastfeeding, when there is no menstruation. In these cases, it is common for the period to disappear for months, and the woman may be pregnant without knowing it.

It seems incredible that she has not noticed any symptoms or changes typical of pregnancy, nor the movements of the baby inside her womb, not even that the pains she felt were actually labor contractions … But as we see, it can happen and they are really cases surprising.

A few days ago I reflected on the way in which motherhood has changed my life. All of us who have been through this know that, although we do not all experience it in the same way (the mere fact of giving birth at term or not can make a huge difference), exhaustion and mental load is a common denominator that identify them all. But when does that mental load really start?
