The titan beetle , scientifically named Titanus giganteus , from the Cerambycidae family. This species of beetle belongs to the Coleoptera group , an order of insects known for having large chewing-type mouthparts and also for the transformation of their front wings into rigid parts that they use as a defense mechanism.
One of the largest beetles in the world
The titan beetle is the largest member of its family and even one of the largest insects today, reaching up to 17 centimeters long in males.
Little is known about the females of this beetle , because they maintain a very discreet behavior and are difficult to find. To date, the same occurs with their larvae, which are speculated to live in rotten wood located deep underground and it is estimated that they can be approximately 30 centimeters long, although it is not known for sure, because no specimen has ever been found in a state of larval development.
Thus, the description of this beetle falls mostly on male specimens, which have been able to be located thanks to their particular large size. And although the titan beetle is nocturnal, it has been caught using light traps installed in its habitat.
Of a reddish brown color, this beetle also stands out among other beetles for its strong mouthparts, although this insect specimen passes all its adulthood without the need to eat, like its close relative, the bull beetle .
So what does the titan beetle use its mouthparts for?
The titan beetle uses its jaws as a defense mechanism, these are so strong that this 17-centimeter insect is capable of splitting a pencil with a single bite and even cutting human skin. Fortunately, it is not a hostile critter and, before attacking, adult individuals whistle warningly when they feel threatened.
Their jaws are also useful for piercing wood and creating holes that provide shelter for them during development, and last but not least, males use their mouthparts when courtship.
Where does the titan beetle live?
Although it is flying, the titan beetle is more adapted to walking at ground level and needs a certain height to take off, but this is not a problem for this beetle because it lives in rainforests in South America, such as the Amazon, where they can climb trees. . Specimens of this species can also be found in countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.
With the current threat to the forests where it inhabits, the titan beetle is in a delicate situation for its survival. For this reason, the protection of wooded or jungle areas such as the Amazon should be a priority; Only by caring for these environments and avoiding their exploitation will it be possible to preserve unique habitats and conserve complex ecological structures such as the home of the titan beetle .
