The games you'll remember the Wii for

Wii U is already among us, so Wii thus ends its successful and surprising journey that began at the end of 2006. It has been six years in which the small Nintendo console has endured the type with hardware that was already obsolete at the time after his departure, six years in which he has monopolized half of the desktop market, six years in which he has redefined interactive entertainment. But there were also games. Here are a few why you will always remember the Wii.

Wii Sport

‘Wii Sport’ is nothing less than directly responsible for absolutely everyone understanding Wii within seconds of turning on the console. Extreme simplicity to open wide the world of videogames to motion sensors and, therefore, to a huge potential audience that has never been attracted to slot machines before .

The first time I waved the Wiimote like a racket, an almost forgotten magic flooded me again. I do not remember such excitement from the jump from 16 to 32 and 64 bits. A few years later came the great ‘Wii Sport Resort’ polishing the formula and banishing the demo feel of its predecessor. A real game that fired many integers findings of the original. The problem is that by then the novelty had become custom.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

‘Super Mario Galaxy’ was a feat, the reinvention of a stagnant world, the conquest of that summit that was thought unattainable called ‘Mario 64’ . ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ is a miracle, overcoming the insurmountable, meeting a brilliant idea at every step.

A server had to swallow his words. There was no opportunism in that second part, but who could imagine such an outrage. Overflowing imagination, continuous surprise, absolute admiration. Playing ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ is to feel with the fingers of a child the happiness that one feels watching ‘Spirited Away’.

Metroid Prime: Corruption

An inhospitable planet full of life, an ancient and dead culture that speaks through its ruins, exploration, research, beauty, loneliness. I’m not talking about ‘Halo 4’ , I’m talking about ‘Metroid Prime’, the incredible reinvention in absorbing three dimensions of a totem that had always been represented two-dimensionally.

An army crossing the sea of stars, the masterpiece of a defense plan, the total integration in a space epic throughout the universe. I’m not talking about ‘Halo’ , I’m talking about ‘Metroid Prime: Corruption’, the superb conclusion to the Prime trilogy and the most perfect FPS experience (which is actually an adventure) with a Wiimote in hand.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I have mixed feelings with ‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’. It is an example of level design and an ambitious demonstration of how to push the original concept of a franchise to the limit. But it is that the game exhausts me. Peaceful wandering through fields, lakes, and mountains was tremendously enjoyable in ancient Zelda . You knew that the time would come to storm a fortress, and that would be when we would sharpen our sword and sharpen our wits to the maximum.

In ‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’ everything is a huge puzzle. By the time you finally get to the dungeon, there are hardly any forces and neurons left. If it is even a challenge to turn the key to the door that leads to the final boss of the shift … Ambitious and delusional.

I know I am an exception, and I was reminded a couple of days ago by a supporter of the game that I met by chance, one of many of that legion of fans. After exposing my doubts to him about whether or not to include Skyward in this selection, I have noticed his gaze. It would not be fair. As a staunch fan of the world of Link since his first 8-bit adventure in the late 80’s I know that I will one day return to that huge puzzle. I know I will enjoy, I know.

Xenoblade

I’m going to tell you a secret. I haven’t played ‘Xenoblade’ for more than 30 hours. Looking at the analysis that I published at the time and how persistent I have been since then (my friends can corroborate it) you would say that I have kicked that incredible adventure from beginning to end, but no, or well, yes.

I was enjoying that initial game as I had for a long time, but if there is something that I am missing in recent years, it is time. Already then I realized that I was facing an authentic barbarity that contradicted with its very existence the dark omens about the death of creativity in Japan . It was at that moment when I was going to throw in the towel that my girlfriend took over and the story began again …

While writing post like this, for 138 conscientious hours (my girlfriend is the oldest, and above all the best, hardcore gamer that I know) I lived an unforgettable journey through a wonderful world. The game was so damn good that I managed to crawl inside it like I was playing myself. My admiration did not stop rising and rising from its warlike beginning to its surprising end. The resulting conclusion was solid as a rock: ‘Xenoblade’ not only dynamited the technical limits of the Wii but went much further, it was one of the greatest games of the current generation , the one in which Wii was always at the tail end.

My Facebook page the Monado crown nailed in a plain bathed by a reddish sunset. From time to time I delight in simply looking at the home screen of the game that houses that postcard, letting myself be carried away by the lofty musical notes that accompany the passage of the day. I will never thank my partner enough for that experience, well, I thanked him a little: since then he has seen a felt Monado on his lapel that I commissioned from a talented friend.

These games are just a sample of the six years of Wii’s life. Admittedly, there have been times of shortage, and the machine’s limited hardware has prevented it from receiving some of this generation’s masterpieces. Still we have a good handful of unrepeatable moments: ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’,’ New Super Mario Bros. ‘,’ No More Heroes’, ‘Muramasa Demon Blade’, ‘Zack & Wiki’, ‘Endless Ocean’, ‘Super Smash Bros. Brawl ‘,’ Kirby Epic’s Yarn ‘,’ Monster Hunter Tri ‘,’ Tatsunoko Vs Capcom ‘,’ Rayman Raving Rabbids’ … But it is not a goodbye, the backward compatibility of Wii U will allow us to continue enjoying these wonders at its highest possible resolution via HDMI . It is not worth it then and yes to give a joyful welcome: “Wii is dead, long live Wii U!”
