Four people die in the accident on Autobahn 5 in Hesse. The police and the public prosecutor assume that a wrong-way driver is responsible. Important questions are still open.
Friedberg – According to the investigators’ previous findings, a wrong-way driver caused the serious accident with four deaths on Autobahn 5 near Friedberg in Hesse.
A 33-year-old from the Gießen district was driving in the wrong direction early on Sunday morning, the police said on Monday.
Between the Friedberg driveway and the Wetterau service area, there was initially a head-on collision with a car that was regularly driving towards Kassel and in which four young people were sitting. Two of the inmates, a 19-year-old woman and a man of the same age, were killed.
Two other 19-year-olds, a man and a woman, survived with very serious injuries. The police reported that her condition was unchanged. The alleged wrong-way driver later died in a Frankfurt clinic. Why he was using the wrong side of the highway was still unclear on Monday afternoon.
Two other cars were then involved in the accident. Any help came too late for the 68-year-old driver of one of the two cars. The 52-year-old driver of the other car was slightly injured.
According to the police, a wrong-way driver had been reported shortly before the accident. At first it was unclear whether it could also have something to do with the fatal collision.
The on-site helpers were faced with a bad sight: the scene of the accident stretched over several hundred meters, a police spokeswoman spoke of a “field of rubble”. According to the police, a crisis intervention team looked after first responders and witnesses to the fatal collision at the rest stop. She asked witnesses to come forward. dpa
