We all know that folic acid is an essential vitamin for a healthy pregnancy. Several studies have analyzed and explained how and why it is important for all women to ensure that they receive the recommended daily amount during pregnancy.
Now, a new study has revealed yet another reason why it is important to make sure that this vitamin is not lacking from the beginning, since having a low level of folic acid would double the risk of miscarriage during the first trimester of pregnancy .
The study
Published in the journal ‘Biochimie’ , the study carried out by a group of researchers from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), analyzed how the level of folates influences the risk of having a spontaneous abortion , something that to date it had been very little studied.
According to their results, having a folate or folic acid deficiency causes homocysteine levels in the blood to rise , which is related to complications during pregnancy.
Specifically, when homocysteine levels rise during the first trimester of pregnancy, the risk of miscarriage doubles . This also happens when the level of folates or folic acid is lower than the levels recommended by the World Health Organization during the weeks before pregnancy.
Therefore, it is important that if we plan to have a pregnancy or discover that we are expecting a baby, we go to our doctor to tell us the recommended and necessary amount of folic acid to start taking it, and thus, prevent complications during our pregnancy.
