The birth rate in Spain is going through its worst moments. According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), 47% fewer babies were born in the first months of 2021 than five years ago.
So some Autonomous Communities, such as Galicia, offer help to families to ensure that more children are born. The last to announce it has been the Community of Madrid. This morning, its president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has assured that from 2022 he will allocate 14,500 euros to pregnant women under 30 years old registered in Madrid for 10 years and who earn less than 30,000 euros per year.
A baby check of 500 euros per month
“For pregnant women under 30 years of age, with incomes below 30,000 euros per year, we will help them with 500 euros per month, from the fifth month of pregnancy and until the baby is two years old .”
“In other words, we are going to help the women who need it most with 14,500 euros for each child born in the Community of Madrid, as long as the mother has been registered here for at least 10 years.”
With these words, the president of the Community of Madrid announced what the regional government is going to do from 2022 to “tackle the birth challenge in a decisive way.”
The measure, which benefits between 12,000 and 14,000 women , will cost Madrid’s budgets 250 million euros per year. In addition, as Isabel López Ayuso announced during her inauguration debate, this aid will be compatible with work, and will be granted for each child , which means that a mother can cash two checks at the same time.
Other measures to support mothers
In addition to financial aid, he has announced other benefits for young mothers in the Community:
-
Pregnant women under 35 years of age will have priority in the next Plan Vive for housing assistance in the Community of Madrid.
-
A specific job bank will be developed for all unemployed mothers, with no age limit. They will also be eligible for training plans and educational support if they decide to go back to study.
With these measures to support the birth rate, Madrid intends to correct the “collapse” in the number of births in the Community, where 56,000 children were born in 2019, 24,000 fewer than in 2008.
