Queen cancels trip for health reasons

The British monarch is not shaken in her sense of duty. But now she follows the advice of her doctors and spares herself for a few days.

London – The news is tight – and it comes as a surprise: Queen Elizabeth II will rest for the next few days on medical advice and not travel to Northern Ireland as planned, Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The 95-year-old queen had “reluctantly” accepted the advice of her doctors – she was disappointed that she was not aware of her scheduled appointments. Hardly any other choice of words could have better expressed the unconditional sense of duty of the monarch.

The news came on a day when the Queen graced various front pages with how she stressed her health with unusual boldness. With an unconventional answer, the Queen turned down the “Oldie of the Year” award, which the senior magazine “The Oldie” wanted to give her.

“Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel,” the 95-year-old’s private secretary Tom Laing-Baker wrote in a written rejection published in the November issue of the magazine. “Therefore, the Queen is of the opinion that she does not meet the relevant criteria to accept the award and hopes that a more suitable candidate will be found.”

The magazine hailed the response as “the most polite rejection in history,” and the British boulevard cheered. The monarch, it seemed, wanted to reassure her people that they shouldn’t worry. But these are likely to become even stronger now.

There had already been rumors about the Queen’s health last week when she showed up with a walking stick at two appointments. “It is believed that she used a walker for the first time at an official public event,” even reported the PA news agency. The Queen last walked with a stick almost 20 years ago. But at the time she had recovered from knee surgery.

Elizabeth II has worked stoically through her royal schedule, which was already full again a few weeks after the death of her husband Prince Philip in the spring, in the past few days. It was not until Tuesday that she received business representatives in Windsor – and looked “fit and happy”, as observers report.

How long the health-related break will last at Windsor Castle and whether details about the reasons will leak out of the palace walls remains to be seen. The decision has nothing to do with Corona, reported PA, citing palace circles. According to previous plans, the Queen, who in the past few days had spoken out in favor of more energetic climate protection, wants to honor the World Climate Conference in Glasgow with her visit at the beginning of November.

At the same time, preparations for the 70th anniversary of the throne are in full swing. The “Platinum Jubilee”, for which the British can even look forward to an extra day off next year, is to be celebrated with a festival lasting several days at the beginning of June, including celebratory parades. dpa
