The corona pandemic is particularly hard on the youngest in society. In England the number of children seeking mental treatment has skyrocketed.
London – The pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental health of children and adolescents in England.
In the second quarter of 2021, 190,271 children and adolescents up to the age of 18 were receiving almost twice as many as in the same period two years earlier, according to published data from the national health service NHS. At that time it was 97,342. The number of very urgent cases also increased significantly.
"The pandemic has had a devastating impact on the mental health of our nation, but it is becoming increasingly clear that children and young people in particular are suffering," said Elaine Lockhart of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, who analyzed the data with her association. Lockhart called on the newly appointed British Minister of Education, Nadhim Zahawi, to make child and adolescent mental health a priority and provide funding. dpa
