'Skyward Sword', everything you need to know about the new Zelda

One of the Nintendo myths is back . And although this year it seems that more has been said about the 3D remake of ‘Ocarina of Time’, in reality it is ‘ Skyward Sword ‘ who has the responsibility of keeping the flame of the saga alive, of innovating what has to be innovated and of overcome the already very distant appearance of the saga on Wii, that ‘Twilight Princess’.

25 years after its creation, Zelda (and Eiji Aonuma, once again project director) must prove in 2011 why it is always a saga that can be trusted. Forever? So far, yes. Now it depends on ‘Skyward Sword’ .

‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’, plot and characters of the last Zelda for Wii

‘Skyward Sword’ is temporarily set before ‘Ocarina of Time’ , with a Link raised on islands floating in the sky of Hyrule. The plot will revolve around the discovery of the sword that gives the game its title and that will allow the protagonist to make trips (back and forth, of course) to the surface of Hyrule.

As the main change of the characters with respect to the rest of the saga, this time Zelda will not be a princess, but a local from Skyloft, the town of Link. Of course… she will disappear to be rescued by the hero. Or not, that will depend on our abilities.

What we do know is that ‘Skyward Sword’, as a good prequel , will allow us to know more about the mythology behind that ‘Ocarina of Time’ that will never cease to be a reference for the Zelda Universe, including something related to Ganondorf.

Game modes and new features in the most aerial and dynamic Zelda of all

As always when preparing a Zelda, many small details have transcended in how we will play it. On the one hand, Nintendo has assured that it wanted a different experience , away from exploring / entering dungeons that has been the key to the entire saga. In addition, the menu of objects is left aside to give way to a new way of selecting them without so much detour.

Graphically, we will abandon the trend towards the realism of ‘Twilight Princess’ in search of something more pictorial, closer to the Cel-Shading of ‘Wind Waker’ and, according to those responsible for the development of the game, with influence of the impressionist painters.

In a game where the air element has so much presence (islands floating in the skies, I remember), it is not surprising that this time the dungeons stop being only horizontal to also extend vertically.

Regarding our movements, ‘Skyward Sword’ will use Wii Motion Plus for sword fights , with the idea of reproducing our movements with the command as closely as possible. Yes, the famous 1: 1 recognition used in such a way that this time it does seem that we have a sword in hand. After ‘Twilight Princess’, it is obvious that this aspect had to improve and has been, since its presentation at E3 2010, the great technical novelty of the game.

The greater detection of our movements will also imply the need for us to squeeze ourselves when carrying out the combats , to be more precise and to look for weak points. For those who do not need so much difficulty, there will be the possibility of pressing the Z button and forgetting to aim.

The other novelty of the game is the famous flying insect that Link manages by remote control and that will allow us to access areas to which our protagonist would not have access otherwise. Its control will arrive like that of the planes of ‘Wii Sports Resort’. In addition, the flying birds that allow us to go between the aerial islands of Hyrule will be part of the game (and the minigames) adding another flying touch to a Zelda that will always have the clouds as a reference.

‘Skyward Sword’: Official release date, trailer and screenshots of the new Zelda

‘Skyward Sword’ will be published in just over two months, on November 18 , if there is no last minute setback. In the last E3 Nintendo allowed to test up to three different areas of the game for a maximum time of 10 minutes per shift.

The conclusions of those who have tried it only negatively highlight a small problem with the camera turns. Since then, there have been more chances to see it in action, as in the famous gameplay video from the last San Diego Comic Con.

For now, the trailer makes it quite clear what ‘Skyward Sword’ will mean for Wii, one of the last great games left to the console before giving way to its long-awaited successor, Wii U.

By needing the use of Motion Plus, ‘Skyward Sword’ will have an edition in which it will be accompanied by the peripheral , but, in addition, for those who already have it there will be another simple one. In both, in principle, it is planned to include a CD with music from the saga, which for the first time in its history arrives in its orchestral version and not in midi.

However, that special edition gold remote is too attractive to pass up. Or don’t you feel like having a Zelda-style ingot?

We still have to wait two months, but ‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’ should be one of the essentials on your 2011 calendar.
