The 6 best beaches in Norway for swimming

While best known for its fjords, Norway’s beautiful beaches attract thousands of visitors each year. There are around three months out of the year when the water on Norway’s beaches is warm enough for swimming, as its climate is quite mild despite its northern location.

There are quite a few beaches in Norway where clothing is optional. If that’s your preference, look for nude beaches in Norway near your travel destination.

These are some of the best beaches Norway has to offer.

Southwest Norway: beaches around Stavanger

Countless top-notch Norwegian beaches lie around the city of Stavanger in southern Norway. Hellesto Beach offers swimming, sunbathing, and an annual kite festival. Godalen Beach, just minutes from Stavanger city center, has barbecue facilities and children’s playground, and is part of the hiking area near Gandsfjorden. And Orrestranda Beach, the longest in Norway at 5 kilometers long, has fine-grained sand and offers ideal conditions for swimming and surfing.

Solastrand, Vigdel and Vaulen are also popular beaches just a short drive from Stavanger.

Oslo city area: beaches in Oslo

In the greater Oslo area, try Oslo’s Bygdoy Peninsula for a nice spot on the beach. The best beaches in Oslo are Huk Beach and Paradisbukta (in Norwegian, Paradise Bay).

Note that Huk Beach is one of Norway’s clothing optional beaches. It also offers recreational opportunities such as biking, running, and beach volleyball.

Paradisbukta is one of the main tourist attractions near Oslo, and its beaches are a bit sandier than Huk’s. It has many amenities to attract visitors, including a pool, grills, and restrooms. It is also convenient for walking and biking across the entire Bygdoy peninsula.

Western Norway: Beach in Selje

Along the western coast of Norway in the Nordfjord district, you will find the romantic town of Selje. Still, somewhat of a best-kept travel secret, the center of this city follows a pretty sandy beach area called Seljesanden that includes a small harbor. There is a daily boat service to and from Bergen.

Hoddevik Beach attracts surfers from all over the world and has a sandy beach between the mountains of western Norway. West Cape offers panoramic views of the Stadhavet Ocean, the Sunnmore Alps, Hornelen Peak and the Alfotbreen Glacier.

Mjelle Red Sand Beach

About a 15-minute drive from the city, Mjelle Beach is a popular swimming spot in the summer, but its colors are what make it a real attraction. The beach is made up of red and white sand, so the hues along the shoreline vary depending on how recent winds and tides have changed the proportion of the grains.

Red sands appear to be heavier so they are likely to be more exposed after a heavy storm. On some days, the beach turns such a deep red that it is almost purple.

Strandskog Nudist Beach (near Oslo)

Strandskog Nude Beach is one of Norway’s many official nude beaches and is just a short drive south of Oslo. It’s considered “clothing optional,” so if you’re not ready to strip everything down, that’s fine too.

Strandskog is one of the smallest nude beaches in Norway, but it has earned a reputation for being a pretty, partially sandy beach with privacy.

Since this is one of the official clothing optional / nude beaches in the country, there are public beach facilities including restrooms and drinking water.
