The 9 best cocktail bars in San Francisco

This city has many bars. Some are old, some are brand new. Some are really fun and some are ridiculously ostentatious. The point is that our city covers the whole gamut. Here are bars dedicated to cider, specifically cider. (It’s Upcider, check it out). But of course there are better ones for everything. Here is our top 9.

Neighborhood: Embarcadero

If you like whiskey, this is your place. It’s right along the Embarcadero and its wide warehouse windows allow city lights to spill into its dimly lit space. The back wall is a wall-to-wall glass shelf that holds amber bottles atop amble bottles, subtly backlit to give them that added glow. The waiters offer us a sliding aluminum ladder to reach the bottle that he points to. A personal favorite is High West’s Double Rye, but if you’re a whiskey drinker they likely have your favorite too.

Neighborhood: Hayes Valley

Come early to avoid the line, as this hidden tiki lounge is a hit with cocktail enthusiasts. It’s nondescript from the outside with darkened windows and nothing more than a small sign that looks like a pirate map, but inside you are transported to an exotic land with waterfalls, bamboo structures, and lots of nautical rope. But the real star of this joint is the cocktails. Go for a volcano, a combination of rum, pineapple, lime and passion fruit juice that reaches your table in flames. Note: it’s meant to be shared, so bring some friends too.

Transporting him to another era is Horsefeather in Divisadero. Its elegant wood paneling and art deco details remind you of the 1930s, as does the glassware. But the hanging plants and a modern indoor / outdoor patio remind you that you really are in San Francisco circa 2016. The cocktails are delicate but packed with power, like the Nighttrain with espresso and bourbon all in one drink. Make sure to buy something from a bar to balance the drink like chicken wings or pulled pork tacos.

Barrio: Haight-Ashbury

A staple of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, The Alembic serves all kinds of cocktails, including a mint julep on perfectly shaved ice. And the food is just as good with options like bacon jacks and pork sliders.

This Mexican restaurant is worth staying for dinner, but if you only have an hour at least, visit La Copa Verde, which is as green as a cocktail. Its combination of smoked mezcal, coriander and chipotle powder makes it a somewhat spicy but at the same time refreshing drink. If you’re not a cilantro lover, don’t worry, there are still plenty of other Mexican-inspired cocktails on the menu.

Barrio: North Beach

This bar is a San Francisco classic that has recently been remodeled to include a restaurant by trendy New York chef April Bloomfield. But you can still hang out by the old cappuccino machine and order a “House Cappuccino,” which is really a combination of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Marie Duffau Bas Armagnac, Dandelion Chocolate Ganache, and Milk. It’s a classic for a reason.

This bar is known for doing tricks and changing the menu and theme every few months. That could mean all the cocktails are inspired by Pantone paint colors or it could be a tiki drink roundup or inspired by a dog of the month calendar (yes, you were once inspired by that). The cocktails are always inventive and delicious, and I think the bar food is the kale salad, which comes out full of nuts and a creamy avocado dressing.

Neighborhood: Marina

Tucked away in the Fort Mason Center, you can enjoy this spot during the day with amazing coffee and ice cream sandwiches, or in the evening with an extensive cocktail list that will ease any craving. The space, created by the Long Now foundation, is as intriguing as the cocktails with kaleidoscopic artwork and a chalk wall seemingly drawing on itself.

Right in the heart of the action, this casual bar serves up creative cocktails like a Tarragon Collins, combining the herb with its classic Collins for a subtle earthy flavor. But before ordering, browse the menu. It is a work of art in itself. Get there early though – the place can really get packed once the after work crowd shows up.
