The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was going to have a sequel but Nintendo canceled it

At the time ‘The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker’ was one of the installments of the Nintendo saga that obtained the most controversy due to the graphics it presented , betting on a cel-shading design that did not like too much at the beginning, although in the end it ended being a great game, one of the best we saw in Game Cube.

Nintendo had big plans for this version of Link, to the point of wanting to develop a sequel that would take place in an area with more ground to move around, instead of having so much water, as in the original game. Even the popular hero in green was going to have a horse to ride , something that didn’t exist in ‘Wind Waker’ either.

As you all know in the end none of all this has come true and the reasons have come to light thanks to the book ” The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts ” which is now available in Japan. It includes a statement by the artist Satoru Takizawa in which he explains the reasons why Nintendo did not want to develop a second part:

‘Wind Waker 2’ was going to take place in an area with more terrain, rather than in the sea, so we could make Link gallop through the areas on a horse. However, Link’s proportions in ‘Wind Waker’ were not suitable for riding a horse as he was very small, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem the most suitable either.

Nintendo could have looked for a way to solve these problems, but the fact that fans were not quite convinced by that style of graphics and the release of other fantasy films of that time prompted the big N to cancel it to think of something different , something like ‘The Legend of Zelda. Twilight Princess’.

While we were stuck in those problems we realized the high demand for a more realistic and taller Link. The real-action fantasy films of that time were also influential, so all things considered, we decided to create ‘Twilight Princess’. I was on the project as an art director and started by bringing in Yusuke Nakano to do Link’s design.

What came after this we all know and is Nintendo history. Even so, the story of ‘Wind Waker’ was later expanded on Nintendo DS with ‘The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass’, so from a certain point of view I did end up with a ‘Wind Waker 2’.
