These are the best hospitals in Spain to give birth: 2020 ranking

When we are in the final stretch of our pregnancy and we think about childbirth, it is normal to feel uncertainty and nervousness, especially if it is our first time. For many women, it is important to know well the hospital where they will give birth, and even have good references to help them face the moment in a more relaxed and confident way.

If this is your case, you may be interested in consulting the “Health Reputation Monitor” (MRS), an independent report that has been carried out for the seventh consecutive year, and which analyzes the reputation of public and private hospitals in Spain, both at a general level. as for specialties.

We have consulted which are the 15 best-rated hospitals in the area of Gynecology and Obstetrics : seven of them are in Madrid, four in Barcelona, and one in each of the cities of Valencia, Navarra, Seville and Córdoba. Do you want to know what they are?

The Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, La Paz and October 12, Madrid, the best valued

After six consecutive years occupying the second place in the ranking, the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona becomes the best valued hospital in 2020 in the specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics , ousting the Hospital La Paz in Madrid, which had been leading the ranking since it began to be published in 2014.

The third place is occupied by the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, which rises one position compared to last year, making the Hospital Vall D’Hebron (Barcelona) fall from third to fourth place.

The Hospital Gregorio Marañón (Madrid), La Fe (Valencia) and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra continue in the fifth, sixth and eighth positions of the ranking respectively, without changing their position with respect to 2019 (although the Gregorio Marañón and the Clínica de Navarra have obtained higher scores than the previous year).

Curiously, the first five positions obtained by hospitals in the area of Gynecology and Obstetrics correspond almost identically to the ranking of hospitals with the best reputation in Spain, being in order: La Paz, El Clínic, El Gregorio Marañón, 12 October and the Vall D’Hebrón.

The highest rise in the ranking in the specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics is experienced this year by the Virgen del Rocío Hospital (Seville), which in 2019 was ranked 12th in the table and this year it rises directly to seven.

Movement of positions in the lower half of the ranking

With the exception of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital, few differences have been seen in the positions that we have just analyzed with respect to the ranking of the previous year. But the same does not happen with the lower part of the table, which is the one that registers the most movements.

In this way, the private hospital Quirón Dexeus (Barcelona) falls from the seventh place it occupied in 2019, to the ninth place in 2020. The Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge (Barcelona) and the Jiménez Díaz Foundation (Madrid), which this year they are ranked 10 and 13 respectively.

The last five positions are occupied by the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid), which last year disappeared from the ranking compared to 2018 and in 2020 returns to the table in position 11, the Hospital Ramón y Cajal, which rises from position 14 to 12, the Jiménez Díaz Foundation that we mentioned earlier, and the Reina Sofía de Córdoba and Quirón San José hospitals (Madrid), which are in the ranking this year.

The A Coruña University Hospital Complex, the Quirón Salud University Hospital (Madrid) and the Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda Hospital (Madrid) disappear from the ranking with respect to the previous year.

How has the ranking been done?

Although we have analyzed the ranking of the best hospitals in the specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Health Reputation Monitor has also developed rankings of the best hospitals in other medical specialties (including Pediatrics), the best hospitals in general, both public and private , as well as other rankings related to the health sector.

In addition, this year, exceptionally, a ranking of the hospitals with the best management during the pandemic has also been included, led by Gregorio Marañón, La Paz and the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, all three from Madrid.

The Merco benchmark monitor has been in charge of preparing this report, which is not financed or sponsored by any public or private entity , and which has been carried out since 2014, being the only independent study that analyzes the reputation of the entire healthcare sector. Spanish.

To carry out the study, three evaluations have been carried out:

  • The first is carried out by medical professionals (2,248 hospital specialists and 301 family and community medicine doctors

  • The second assessment is carried out by 2,758 nurses, 259 hospital managers and managers, 251 nurse managers, 72 managers of pharmaceutical companies responsible for hospital pharmacy, 549 managers of patient associations, as well as 163 journalists and health informants based to 16 reputation variables for clinical services

  • The previous evaluations are complemented by the third analysis of more than 2,853 specific objective indicators of 2,704 clinical services.

The production process has undergone an independent review by KPMG in accordance with the ISAE 3000 standard, and is endorsed by collegiate organizations of doctors and nurses, as well as patient associations and health journalists.
