The Minister of Health Carolina Darias yesterday stressed the importance of pregnant women being vaccinated to avoid serious complications, and in some cases fatal, related to Covid-19.
This recommendation is derived from concern about an increase in cases in pregnant women and the death of at least three pregnant women , in Barcelona, Malaga and Murcia, according to data from the Spanish Society of Gynecology.
“Today I have made an appeal to work on raising awareness of the importance of vaccination in pregnant women. We are going to have meetings with gynecological societies, midwives, midwives … We have had fatal cases in recent days and we It worries. There is no data, but we know that vaccines save lives, “ explained Carolina Darias.
Pregnant in serious condition
Pregnant women are at greater risk of serious consequences if they become ill and require specialized intensive care care, as well as an increased risk of having a preterm delivery or having the newborn require neonatal intensive care. Experts point out that there have been numerous urgent cesarean sections due to the worsening of the pregnant women.
In hospitals, the number of hospitalized pregnant women increased considerably. At the Vall d’Hebron Hospital it is especially alarming: forty pregnant women are admitted, nine of them in the ICU. The main reason for hospitalizations of pregnant women is their age and that they are not vaccinated , and that is why they can end up hospitalized.
The head of infectious diseases at Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Benito Almirante, stressed in an interview with La Sexta that “in addition to the possible severity of the disease, it can condition pregnancy complications. Some have had deceased newborns .”
Safe vaccines in pregnant women
From Babies and more, a couple of days ago, we recommended vaccination in pregnant women and commented that the WHO itself has asked that this group be prioritized due to serious complications, both for the mother and the baby that the disease could cause.
Based on available studies, the vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective , and no adverse effects have been recorded during pregnancy. Instead, it protects the mother from becoming seriously ill and provides immunity to the baby during the first months of life.
It is true that at first the safety of the vaccines was not so clear and this has created reluctance in pregnant women, even gynecologists did not massively recommend vaccination, but the tests carried out confirm that vaccines with messenger RNA, such as the one from Pfizer and Modern, they are the most suitable during pregnancy.
Experts call pregnant women to be vaccinated as soon as possible, since the greatest risk occurs in the third trimester and it is “key that they reach week 28 of pregnancy with the complete vaccination schedule.”
