But sometimes, when deciding to go for one more child, nature ends up surprising parents with more than one baby.
This is the case of a couple from North Dakota, United States, who, after having two children, longed to have a girl, but when looking for a third pregnancy, they ended up conceiving quintuplets naturally . We tell you their story.
Joshua and Megan Hulen knew they wanted three children, and since they already had Jacob and Matthew aged seven and two respectively, they hoped their third pregnancy would finally bring them a girl. But luckily they had not only one girl, but four and one more boy, as this last pregnancy turned out to be multiple .
Having quintuplets naturally is extremely unlikely – it happens in one in every 55 million pregnancies . And Joshua and Megan turned out to be that one in 55 million. Most surprising of all, Megan had had trouble conceiving before.
According to an interview conducted by The Sun, Megan had undergone fertility treatments and intrauterine insemination for her other pregnancies, due to not ovulating naturally due to suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome .
They had just decided to go for the girl and start fertility treatment, when nature surprised them and Megan managed to conceive naturally ” I started to feel really weird and I thought there would be no way I was pregnant, because I had never ovulated without the help of a treatment, “says Megan.
But life would have even more surprises for them, because when they performed an ultrasound at five weeks, they discovered that not only was one baby on the way, but five . The shock was so great that Megan was in shock the rest of the day, crying and thinking about the possible complications of a pregnancy with five babies.
However, remembering the stress that she experienced due to the difficulties of her first pregnancy, she decided that the best thing was to do everything possible to relax and try to live each moment of pregnancy in the best way : “I started taking pictures of my belly every week and I celebrated those little advances, “he says.
Naturally, carrying five babies at the same time was exhausting, so Megan could not do many things or stand for long moments, as she would tire very quickly.
When she turned 32 weeks, the doctors decided to admit Megan and perform an emergency cesarean section after seeing that her blood pressure was too high . Fortunately, all five babies were born well and the delivery went so fast that Megan was impressed by how quickly they were born one after the other: ” It took longer to resolve my bleeding and close me than to get all the babies out .”
Three days later, Megan was discharged while her babies had to remain in the neonatal intensive care unit for three more weeks, although without presenting any complications.
The happy family of seven is now home and has made it through those first weeks of practically no sleep, while they continue to try to find balance in the precious chaos they now live in : ” We are very excited and happy to have a great family. What’s more Bigger than we planned but we are very blessed and we are very happy about this, “Megan concludes.
