Healthcare workers are on the front line in the fight against the coronavirus, exposed to a greater risk of contagion when caring for patients with Covid. That is why it is good news that, in protection of pregnant women, the right to immediate discharge has been recognized for a 16-week pregnant doctor, due to risk during pregnancy due to exposure to COVID-19 patients .
The Union of Doctors of Public Assistance of Castilla-La Mancha (Simap) has obtained that a Social Court of Toledo declares the suspension of the contract of the doctor “immediately”, and the perception of benefit from the corresponding mutual .
In a press release, the union has assured that the ruling is “very important”, since, to date, the mutual did not recognize this right until the 24th week of pregnancy, although it has added that, from now on, it will have to acknowledge it “from the moment it becomes aware of the request by the pregnant woman at risk from exposure to Covid-19”.
They consider that even if it takes less time to gestation, waiting until week 24 would pose a danger to their unborn child and to their own health as they are exposed to workplace risks, including Sars-COV-2.
We celebrate this novel judicial ruling of importance for other pregnant women, from which “many SESCAM workers and other areas of the administration of the Castilla-La Mancha Community Board who are in a similar situation can benefit.”
