Tower Bridge in London opens to ships around 800 times a year. This time it doesn't close again. Traffic jams immediately.
London – Due to a technical defect, the famous Tower Bridge in central London could not be closed on Monday afternoon.
"Tower Bridge is currently closed to traffic and pedestrians due to a technical error," said the City of London Police on Twitter. The two wings of the bridge can be seen folded up on recordings on the British broadcaster ITV.
For an initially unexplained reason, these reports could not be lowered as usual. The flow of traffic over the Thames was thus interrupted, and traffic quickly jammed on both sides of the bank.
The Tower Bridge usually opens around 800 times a year – i.e. around twice a day – for ships. They must apply for opening at least 24 hours in advance in writing. dpa
