The corona pandemic again dominates the vote for the “Word of the Year”. This time the jury of the Society for German Language decided on a positive term.
Wiesbaden – “Wellenbrecher” is the “Word of the Year” for 2021. This was announced by the Society for the German Language (GfdS) in Wiesbaden on Friday.
The word comes from coastal protection and is now used for measures that are used to protect the population in the corona pandemic, explained GfdS managing director Andrea-Eva Ewels.
The pandemic also dominates the language
“SolidAHRität” landed in second place. The word refers to the relief operations in the Ahr valley after the flood disaster. The list of the Society for the German Language comprises a total of ten words. Seven of them dealt with the pandemic, Ewels said.
The campaign regularly selects terms which, in the opinion of the jury, have linguistically determined political, economic and social life in Germany. More than 2000 suggestions were received this year. Last year, the “Corona Pandemic” was named “Word of the Year”. dpa
