Nintendo has provided us with its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2014 , which runs from April 1 to June 30, 2013, and I think it is worth taking a look to see what is happening with the Wii U, for example, but also with your other consoles.
The first thing that stands out is how little the Wii U has sold (160,000 units in the quarter), especially if we compare its figures with those of the Wii. Next we will see the data in more detail, but I already anticipate that, despite the bad numbers of the Wii U, Nintendo returns to the positive results .
Figures are expressed in millions of units:
| S1 EF2014 (April 1-June 30, 2013) |
Since its launch | ||
| Nintendo DS | Hardware software |
0.06 2.15 |
153.93 935.84 |
| Nintendo 3DS | Hardware software |
1.40 11.01 |
32.48 106.04 |
| Wii | Hardware software |
0.21 3.67 |
100.04 872.73 |
| Wii U | Hardware software |
0.16 1.03 |
3.61 14.44 |
Look at the table: 160,000 units of Wii U compared to the 210,000 units that Wii has managed to sell during the first quarter of fiscal year 2014. With the Wii at 150 euros in our country and the Wii U with a basic pack that reaches the 300 euros, who is going to buy the second if he thinks that he will not find substantial differences between the two? The Wii U, in the eyes of many buyers, doesn’t offer much more than the Wii, but it costs twice as much . There will be many more factors to take into account (those of us who do know the differences between the two also see that there is a lack of support from third parties), but things are like this.
The Wii exceeds one hundred million units sold
On the other hand, looking at these figures, another important fact should be noted: the Wii has exceeded 100,000,000 units sold since its launch . A figure that has also reached the software of the Nintendo 3DS.
In addition, the following must be taken into account:
- Nintendo 3DS hardware and software sales worldwide have grown 12% and 10% , respectively, compared to the previous quarter (January 1 to March 31, 2013).
- Revenues generated by downloadable content have grown by almost 150% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Finally I leave you a new table for those of you who want to know the billing and benefits information (in millions of yen):
| Net turnover | Operating profit | Ordinary profit | Net profit | |
| Q1 fiscal year 2014 (April 1 to June 30, 2013) | 81,548 | (4,924) | 14,817 | 8,624 |
| Q1 fiscal year 2013 (April 1 to June 30, 2012) | 84,813 | (10,331) | (29,781) | (17,231) |
