The issue of the coronavirus is one that worries us all, but it can certainly be something that causes a lot of fear to women who are expecting a baby. While it is true that we have talked about cases in which the mother gives birth while in a coma due to Covid, the reality is that these are rare.
For example, we have the results of one of the most recent studies on the subject, which found that pregnant women with Covid-19 and their babies are at low risk of severe symptoms .
The study
Published in the JAMA Network Open magazine, the study was conducted by the University of Texas Medical Center, and to the reassurance of many women, the majority of pregnant women who have been infected with the coronavirus did not present adverse results.
According to the results of the study, 95 percent of the pregnant women with Covid-19 who participated in the research did not have adverse results and of that number of women, only in three percent of the cases the virus was transmitted to their babies .
When talking about adverse outcomes, complications such as preterm delivery, pre-eclampsia with severe features, or cesarean delivery due to abnormal fetal heart rate are included.
In the case of the remaining five percent of women who had coronavirus in their pregnancies, they did develop a serious or critical illness, however, these figures are lower than in other previous studies .
It is important to mention that one of the observations found during the study is that diabetes can be a factor that increases the risk of serious or critical maternal illness.
