Although we have already a year since the coronavirus was declared a pandemic, there are still many questions about this virus and how it affects each person according to their age and living conditions.
A few months ago, the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom and the World Health Organization (WHO) published the results of a global study, in which they analyzed the results of 77 studies related to the coronavirus in pregnancy.
Now, they have published a new update of this meta-analysis, where in total the conclusions of 192 studies from different countries have been reviewed , which helps to understand more and more how this virus affects pregnant women. We share their results with you.
The study
Published in the British Medical Journal , this new update includes 115 new studies, in addition to the 77 that had already been analyzed in the previous study, adding a total of 64,676 pregnant women from around the world .
This new systematic review and meta-analysis found that one in 10 pregnant or recently pregnant women, who went to the hospital or were admitted to a hospital for various reasons, tested positive for coronavirus.
As in the previous review, pregnant and recently pregnant women suffering from coronavirus were less likely to show symptoms, and were considered a high-risk group, since the risk of suffering from it in a serious way is higher.
They also mention that although in general the risk increases in pregnant women, this happens particularly when there are certain conditions , such as having a high body mass index (BMI) or suffering from a pre-existing disease such as diabetes and chronic hypertension.
It is important to remember that this type of research does not seek to alarm , and they add that in most cases (95% according to another study), pregnant women with Covid-19 do not usually suffer from it in a serious or severe way or have adverse results.
Overall, the new review confirms most of the conclusions that had been found in the previous review, helping to continue to understand how the virus works in pregnant women and remembering the importance of attending and following prenatal consultations. doctor’s instructions .
