In pregnancy, it is important to see our doctor and keep track of how everything is progressing, to make sure that the baby is developing well, as well as analyze the mother’s health and thus prevent or detect possible complications in time.
However, many pregnant women are afraid of having to attend their pregnancy control appointments during the pandemic, but according to a new study, going to those that are essential does not increase the risk of contagion of coronavirus .
Published in the journal JAMA , the research carried out through the analysis of the records of four hospitals in Boston, United States, analyzed whether attending prenatal appointments increased the risk of contagion of Covid-19.
One of the concerns that have arisen during the pandemic is that patients who need follow-ups and control appointments avoid going to these medical check- ups for fear of contracting the coronavirus when attending hospitals and health centers.
But at least in the case of pregnant women, they can be a little calmer, because according to the results of this study, attending control appointments did not increase or affect the risk of contracting Covid-19 .
Dr. Sharon Reale, one of the study authors, comments that this research provides important evidence that follow-up appointments can continue to be performed safely:
” Our findings should reassure our obstetric patients that when they come to the hospital for appointments, they are not increasing their risk of infection, ” he explains.
He also comments that his results need to be replicated outside the obstetric area to see if similar results are obtained in other specialties, but that these work as an indicator that those necessary and important consultations should be made and in general are safe .
