Every day we discover new things about how the coronavirus behaves during pregnancy and how it affects the baby. For now, Health explains that it has not been shown that the coronavirus is present in amniotic fluid, umbilical cord or breast milk.
Meanwhile, a study also found lesions in the placenta of pregnant women who tested positive for Coronavirus, so it seems that the virus does affect the development of pregnancy.
But we have also known cases of babies that have been born completely healthy to infected mothers, and now we know of another good news: local Chinese media have reported the birth of a baby with Covid-19 antibodies after passing the virus to its mother during pregnancy. Mother and son are already home.
The mother was asymptomatic
Xiao Yu (pseudonym) has lived in Shenzhen, China for a long time. In mid-January, she and her husband went to Wuhan (the epicenter of the pandemic) to visit relatives. A few days later he began to have tenths of fever and physical discomfort. But soon he was fine.
In early February her mother tested positive for coronavirus, so she and her husband spent a 14-day quarantine in an isolation center. During this time, she tested negative for Covid-19, but even so after returning home, the couple continued to live separately.
In April the woman went to the hospital for an obstetric check-up. The test this time was positive, but since Xiao Yu had no symptoms of fever or cough, she was transferred to Shenzhen Third Hospital as an asymptomatic patient.
There they proposed to do a chest X-ray, to which she was opposed to not harm the baby, but the doctors explained that a single CT at the end of the pregnancy would not affect the fetus. In the end he accepted.
Dr. Xia Junxia, director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shenzhen City Third Hospital, explained to a local newspaper that the CT results showed that there was no injury to the mother’s lungs. So after consulting with the group of experts, they concluded that she was asymptomatic and decided not to give her medication . But they closely watched his progress and adjusted the treatment plan as needed. To better care for Xiao Yu, the hospital assigned two neonatal nurses to take care of her exclusively.
Newborn with antibodies
After ten days hospitalized and six negative tests, Xiao Yu was discharged. Before leaving the hospital, he even wrote a thank you letter to the medical staff:
“Thank you for watching us every day, measuring blood oxygen, blood pressure and the fetal heart three times a day. In fact, sometimes at very hard hours, like before sunrise. Now, go to work now worry about other patients. “
On May 30, Xiao Yu gave birth to a healthy baby at Shenzhen Third Hospital, weighing 3,340 kg and 50 cm long. Midwife Yi Jingjing explained in local media that the mother was a “quiet pregnant woman” :
“Many women in labor remove their masks in the delivery room because of very heavy breathing, but Xiao Yu was very cooperative the entire time and did not remove them.”
Xiao Yu confirms that she felt calm: “I had never had a baby before. The doctor told me to do whatever I wanted. I have always been in good health and I was convinced that the baby would be fine.” In fact, as the obstetrician who attended her explains, the delivery was very fast.
After the birth, the medical team sent samples of amniotic fluid, placenta, fetal membranes, blood from the mother and fetus, and the umbilical cord to the Shenzhen Third Hospital Research Institute for testing.
The results were very satisfactory: both Xiao Yu and the baby tested negative and the baby was found to have antibodies against the new virus, which meant that he had developed antibodies. However, the placenta and fetal membranes did test positive for Covid-19.
Xia Junxia, director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shenzhen Third Hospital explains that ” the mother must have transmitted her antibodies to the baby , while the placenta and membranes are shared by mother and baby and function as a natural barrier to protect the baby. If the mother is attacked by viruses and bacteria, the placenta and fetal membranes can prevent them from invading the fetus . “
On June 3, Xiao Yu and her little boy were discharged from the hospital and are already home. Good news for pregnant women who fear getting Covid-19. Not only is your baby almost certain to be born healthy, but it can also be born with antibodies.
