"Because he drinks what you drink", the campaign that reminds us to avoid alcohol consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding

In Babies and More we have talked on several occasions about lifestyle changes that should be made during pregnancy. Although these may vary according to the health characteristics of each woman, there is something that applies to all equally: during pregnancy, not a drop of alcohol.

As a reminder, and to continue reporting on this important issue, the Spanish Association of Midwives (AEM) and the Association of Brewers of Spain have launched a new campaign entitled “Because he drinks what you drink”, in which they warn to avoid alcohol consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding .

For years, various studies have been carried out whose purpose has been to analyze and review how the mother’s alcohol consumption affects the baby during pregnancy, since as we know, it can reach him through the placenta and the bloodstream .

However, despite the fact that there is so much research on the subject, there are still people who think that drinking alcohol, even in minimal amounts such as a drink during pregnancy or lactation, does not affect the baby , when to date there is no amount safe alcohol to drink during pregnancy.

For this reason, the Spanish Association of Midwives (AEM) and the Association of Brewers of Spain decided to team up and help raise awareness through the new campaign with a title that makes it very clear what happens with alcohol during pregnancy and breastfeeding: the baby drinks what we drink .

In the video, it is explained how alcohol can affect the baby during both stages , since in pregnancy it is able to pass to him through the placenta, while during lactation, it can pass to the baby through the blood stream.

Some important data that are also mentioned in the video are those of a study carried out in Malaga, in which it was found that 42% of women admit to having drunk alcohol during pregnancy, but only between 2 and 3 percent of them are aware that a single drink can be harmful .

Remember that consuming alcohol during pregnancy can pose great risks , such as altering the baby’s genes, modifying its face, or even causing a group of conditions called fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, the most serious of which is fetal alcohol syndrome.

For this reason, and for all the scientific evidence that continues to affirm that not even one drink is safe, it is still necessary to remember that alcohol consumption should be completely avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding .

Breastfeeding in children older than one year: breastfeeding from 12 months is not spoiling

The first thing that caused me doubt when writing the post was the title. I have often heard the terms prolonged breastfeeding to refer to children older than 12 months who are still nursing. Or breastfeeding in older children. And yet, I get the impression that these terms refer to something that is not normal, as if breastfeeding had to have a short duration or children beyond the age of 2 years were considered too old to breastfeed.

Breast cancer during breastfeeding: a difficult diagnosis to face

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Spain. I have realized that my mental burden as a mother did not begin after...

A few days ago I reflected on the way in which motherhood has changed my life. All of us who have been through this know that, although we do not all experience it in the same way (the mere fact of giving birth at term or not can make a huge difference), exhaustion and mental load is a common denominator that identify them all. But when does that mental load really start?
