Covid symptoms in pregnant women can last up to more than two months

Pregnant women with Covid-19 can have symptoms of the disease for two months or more. This has been revealed by a study carried out in the United States, which indicates that the average time for symptoms to disappear was 37 days .

The study, published in Obstetrics & Gynecology , was conducted with 594 pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19, but who did not need to be hospitalized.

They concluded that symptoms generally ease after a month, but may persist longer for 25 percent of them.

While 60% of the women had no symptoms after four weeks, 25% still persisted for eight weeks or more.

The most common symptoms in pregnant women were cough (20%), sore throat (16%), body aches (12%) and fever (12%), while loss of taste or smell was the first symptom in the 6% of them, according to research from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Other symptoms included shortness of breath, runny nose, sneezing, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea or dizziness, the study added.

“People pregnant with Covid-19 can expect to have symptoms for a longer time” and these can have a significant impact on health and well-being, “said lead author Vanessa Jacoby of UCSF.

The pregnant women who participated in the study were a mean age 32, and the mean gestational age was 24 weeks. Unlike most of the previous research that has been carried out in pregnant women, which focused on those who remained hospitalized, this study focused on patients who attended outpatient clinics.

The researchers found several common symptoms of COVID-19, but they also saw that virus-related symptoms were complicated by the overlap of symptoms from a normal pregnancy, such as nausea, fatigue, and congestion.

“Despite the potential risks of COVID-19 for pregnant people and their newborns, there are large gaps in our knowledge about the course of the disease and the general prognosis,” said Afsahr, who considered that these results may help women. pregnant women and their doctors better understand what to expect from infection. “
