Excessive weight gain during pregnancy could be associated with an increased risk of asthma and childhood allergy

In pregnancy it is common for many women to think that they should now eat for two, but nothing could be further from the truth. Although it is important to make sure that we do not lack any of the basic and necessary foods at this stage, it is important to continue taking care of the portions of what we eat .

Several studies have found that not watching the kilos we gain in this stage can be counterproductive, and a new study has found yet another reason to take care of them in pregnancy, since excessive weight gain during pregnancy could increase the risk of asthma and allergy childish .

Published in the Jama Network Open magazine, the study was carried out in China with the participation of 15,145 pairs of mothers and children, who were followed for eight years , keeping a record of the mother’s gestational weight and the health of their children during infancy.

According to their results, having excessive weight gain during pregnancy could be associated with an increased risk of children suffering from asthma and allergies in childhood .

It was found that compared to mothers who gained the recommended amount of weight in pregnancy, those children of mothers who gained more than 15 kilos had a 13% higher risk of suffering from asthma, allergic rhinitis, or some food allergy or some medication, while also increasing the risk of eczema by 9%.

When mothers gained more than 25 kilos during pregnancy, the risk of suffering from any of them increased : asthma to 22%, allergic rhinitis to 14%, eczema to 15% and food allergies or to medications to 21%, compared to normal weight gain.

All these risks were even greater when women were already overweight before their pregnancies . This study not only reminds us of the importance of taking care of our weight during pregnancy, but also of starting to take care of our health in general long before.
