Exercising in pregnancy improves lung function and reduces the risk of asthma in the baby

Exercise in pregnancy has great benefits, not only for the mother who practices it, but also for the baby that is on the way. Research presented at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society showed, for the first time, a link between lower lung function in babies born to physically inactive mothers compared to those born to active mothers.

Dr Gudmundsdottir, a pediatrician and PhD student at the University of Oslo, Norway, and study author said: “Previous studies have shown that people with low lung function in childhood are at increased risk of asthma, other obstructive lung diseases. and lower lung function in the future. “

Physical activity in pregnancy is related to better lung function in the newborn and a lower risk of developing respiratory diseases such as asthma.

The researchers evaluated data from 814 healthy babies born to women in Oslo and Stockholm. They asked the mothers to complete questionnaires around 18 and 34 weeks of pregnancy about their health, lifestyle, socioeconomic factors, and nutrition. Based on their responses, they were classified as inactive, fairly active, or very active.

They found that babies of inactive mothers compared to active ones were more likely to have low lung function.

Although there is no clear definition of ‘low’ lung function, studies, including those in our own group, have found that infants with a t PTEF / t E (flow and expiratory time) measurement of less than 0.20 little after birth they were more likely to have a history of asthma by the age of 10 .

The researchers will follow the babies as they grow to see how lung function progresses and how it is related to the development of respiratory diseases, such as asthma.

More exercise and no tobacco

Researchers highlight the importance of being active in pregnancy and the positive impact this can have on the future health of the baby.

They also warn about avoiding tobacco before, during and after pregnancy to take care of lung function and health in childhood and later life.

All of us who have been through this know that, although we do not all experience it in the same way (the mere fact of giving birth at term or not can make a huge difference), exhaustion and mental load is a common denominator that identify them all. But when does that mental load really start?
