Mexican food stores in Berlin

There has long been a complaint from foreigners at the German capitol,

Where is the Mexican food?

The Germans didn’t know they were missing it, but the growing food scene certainly noted their absence. After years of cucumbers in mediocre dips and hot dips, it was only a matter of time before stores responded to the influx of Mexican food lovers.

Skip the usually terrible sauces to make your own fresh produce from the outdoor markets in the summer. Turkish dürüm wraps can be a suitable substitute for flour tortillas. Black beans were once elusive, but now they can be found in places like Asian markets. And everyone’s favorite, the avocado, can be purchased year-round in most supermarkets (although the quality varies greatly).

But what about corn, cactus, or jalapeno pepper tortillas? It is impossible to find many staples of Mexican cuisine unless you go to a specialty store. Fortunately, these four stores offer essential and hard-to-find Mexican ingredients in Berlin (as well as other international products).

Please note that most shops in Germany, not just specialty shops, are closed on Sundays.

This store is located under the noisy tracks between Alexanderplatz and Jannowitzbrucke, uncomfortably sandwiched between Asian markets and clothing stores.

Advertised as a hot sauce shop, it actually has all kinds of hot accessories. This is a great gift spot with fiery goods like habanero seed packets and chili soda to ignite your taste buds.

For the connoisseur, this is also a salsa heaven. Barbecue sauces, sauces and very spicy hot sauce. They even have salsa verde ! Shop at the little shop and enjoy the many samples.

If you have any questions, the friendly merchants have clearly bypassed the rule that Berlin customer service is terrible. They are happy to chat in German and English about your favorite sauces, newcomers, and provide special requests. We bought a selection of hot sauces to raise the spice level in our home and a jar of pickled nopales (cactus popsicles) to increase the authentic factor in our tacos.

With the word “Spain” in the title, we had a feeling that this store could only cater to the Spanish crowd. However, our fears were proven wrong when we discovered hidden Mexican treasures on its busy street corner.

The unicorn of Mexican ingredients in Berlin, the white corn tortilla, can be purchased here in bulk. While small packages are available fresh, there are large packages for sale in the freezer. For the truly dedicated, there’s masa flour to make your own corn tortillas and even a tortilla press and a hot tortilla stand.

Along with this miracle of Mexican food, the store has tomatillas , chorizo, dishes, cakes and a host of Spanish products.

The new kid on the block, Chili & Paprika, has improved from his original little shop and now has a little more room for his ever-growing list of spicy ingredients. Their hearty tomatillos, chayotes and tunas spill from the store on a sunny day in an attractive variety of red, white and green.

Here you can also find corn tortillas (both frozen and fresh) plus a tortilla press. There are sweets and spirits, and canned gods cover the entire myriad of Mexican ingredients, good enough for Germany.

Prices are reasonable and the helpful owner is happy to help you choose the best Mexican sweets, drinks, and other products from Latin America.
