When you talk about rum, you think of the New World, sugar cane and pirates. Sugar cane is one of the first plants that Columbus brought and that in those unknown lands settled down very well thanks to the climate . Rum is made from the fermentation of sugar cane molasses , which is then distilled in copper stills (now made of stainless steel) to achieve high ethanol contents. With this, the different rum cocktails that we know today are made , but before it was drunk pure.
Of course, nowadays it is also drunk without additives or juices, but this liquor is so strong and so aromatic that it is ideal for preparing all kinds of cocktails, which, although they do not reduce the alcohol content, they soften the concentrated flavor somewhat. . We speak of pirates because they were the ones who made it known in all the islands of the Caribbean in the seventeenth century. Originally it was called kill devil or rumbullion – an English word that means “great tumult” – in French guildive , which is a modification of kill devil , and tafia, an indigenous or African word, and finally rum , and hence rum. On pirate ships it was a basic necessity without which one would not go out to sea .
